Hooray (WMATA Triptych)
Hooray is composed of steel fins that are radially arranged to reflect D.C.’s urban grid. The project is situated within a pocket of public space notched away from the perimeter of WMATA’s HQ building. We were inspired by this architectural/urban gesture of good will and how it provides a shared space that enhances the community. The center of Hooray was intentionally carved out in order to create a unique aperture and grand public bench that encourages direct engagement and use. At 19 feet tall, the sculpture serves as a landmark that is observable at great distances. Up close, the richly textured fins, inspired by the color of cherry blossoms and DC metro lines, invite visual exploration from all angles.
Hooray was completed in 2022 with the support of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Art in Transit Program and is located at 300 7th Street SW, Washington, DC.
