Flatiron Tulips
"Flatiron Tulips" is a set of streetlights designed for the Flatiron District in New York City. There were a number of unique constraints that guided the design process. The lighting would have to be located high above the ground, structurally stable, and somewhat easy to relocate if necessary. An existing set of planters drew our attention given their weight and the fact that they’re often repositioned to accommodate the needs of different events and vendors. The “tulips” act as a surreal offshoot of these planters, providing a pop of color and light source for the plaza. Their triangular form factor and soft corners are a nod to the iconic Flatiron Building.
“Flatiron Tulips” is located at Flatiron Plaza in New York City. The project was installed on November, 2024 and was made possible with support of the Flatiron NoMad Partnership.
